The Navajo Nation encompasses 26,000 square miles in Arizona and New Mexico. Because the Navajo people live in extreme poverty, their companion animals receive little or no veterinary care. In addition, large numbers of stray dogs on the Navajo Nation are a public health and safety concern. The Pegasus Foundation works with various organizations that provide spay, neuter, vaccination and other veterinary services on or near the Navajo Nation, with a long-term goal of reducing stray dog populations and improving animal welfare.
